SFOG.net was privileged to be invited to attend the media day preview on 5/14/09 for the newly refurbished Monster Mansion!

Our party had arrived by 11:30 and we were greeted by the park's PR manager, Hela Sheth. (Thank you, Hela, for your hospitality!)  The Monster Mansion area was festively decorated with balloons, and a fun picnic-themed lunch awaited us.

First, we took a tour of the highly anticipated Monstore (thank you, Greg!) and we were totally blown away.  The store is fantastic!  Not only is it chock full of Monster merchandise, such as plush toys and t-shirts, it also houses the on-ride photos, and it serves as a musem of the history of the ride.

Original marquettes of the ride's loveable monsters are carefully displayed in a glass box.  A beautiful mural sprawls across the back wall, featuring marshal Billy Bob Fritter, his pet Fritter-Bitter, Mizzy Scarlett, and her pet Tattytoo (not sure on the spelling of that one yet!), just to name a few.  A television loops old-school footage of Gary Goddard and company working on the original version of the ride.  For the butterfly-loving princess in your life, there is Mizzy Scarlett's Bootique, where you can find beautiful dress-up costumes for girls.

After gawking at the Monstore, we were treated to a wonderful lunch.  Large tables were set up in front of the Mansion with red and white checkered tablecloths, setting up the picnic feel.  Adorable centerpieces featured a small plush Billy Bob, Tattytoo, or Buzzby.  Catering was done by Mother's Finest Catering, and the food was delicious.  There were mini picnic baskets with your choice of sandwich, including chicken salad, turkey, ham, and vegetarian.  Tucked inside the basket was a cup of pasta salad and a bag of chips, and your choice of drink was served in a Monster Mansion cup.  Classic apple pie was served for dessert.  The food was great and we thank Mother's Finest for the fantastic spread!

After lunch, the opening ceremonies began.  Hela introduced park president Melinda Ashcraft, who spoke briefly about her early days with the park.  She then introduced ride creators Gary Goddard and Phil Mendez, who spoke about the history and refurbishment of the ride.  We were also treated to a live performance of the Monster Mansion theme song by the third grade Mt Paran children's choir.  The kids were great, and some of them even brought along their very own monster puppets to help out.

The name of the Mansion's newest monster was then announced -- Papa Razzi is the official name of the very first monster you encounter on the ride, and he's always ready to snap a photo of passersby!

Finally, Melinda Ashcraft, Gary Goddard, and Phil Mendez cut the ribbon and declared the new Monster Mansion officially open.  We queued up and within minutes we were experiencing Monster Mansion for the very first time.

The ride is, quite simply, wonderful.  Fresh, new, updated, refurbished and refurred, flashy, exciting; but still the same old plantation that we all know and love.  Goddard and company, as well as Six Flags, truly worked together to create the perfect mixture of new technology and classic nostalgia.

Personally, my ride highlights were a lot of the new 4D effects, such as the bubbles, the spitting frogs, and the fog curtain as you enter the marsh.  I also especially enjoyed seeing all the tombstone shoutouts in the graveyard scene.

My only complaint is that the Monster Mansion is so new and so fresh, it doesn't have that old, musty mansion smell any more..   smiley

Our very own MR6 attended the media day as well!  We caught up with him around lunch time and shared a ride through the mansion.  He received a very nice gift from Phil Mendez himself!   cheesy

Media day was wonderful and we had a blast.  Again, I would like to thank PR manager Hela Sheth for having us out, park president Melinda Ashcraft, Greg Fuller, Bob Armstrong, Mother's Finest Catering, and everyone else at the park who work hard daily to maintain this ride.  And of course, thanks to Gary Goddard and company for the amazing ride.  smiley

Our day was well documented, between myself and our staff photographer, Tyler.  Photos of Monster Mansion, the Monstore, and media day events can be found here in our photo gallery:  http://sfog.net/pics/thumbnails.php?album=27

Don't wait -- go experience Monster Mansion.  We think you'll be very glad you did!

Ok, ok, ok, Humans, the focus ain't Mr 6 here ya know? cool

But once again, I find myself humbled by the fine comments and opinions. Especially those about ME! kiss

First of all, we thank The Atlanta Flags for being wonderful hosts, once again. And if we can figure out how the throw these types of affairs, on a larger scale, no one would ever complain about Themes again! Maybe they work because they tend to be more one on one, not sure. But what I do know is this was another fine event.

Next thanks to Jackie, Brad, Chris and Tyler. While I know many others are involved, and I will also get blamed for forgetting someone, these folks were my table pals. I was also amazed that I knew so many at the party. I actually figured that I did visit a few tables, going around saying hecko. Yep, 6 on parade.

I'm still trying to figure out why they kept taking so many pictures of me. But anyway, all good. And Jackie snapped up one of me, thanks for removing my center part. You know this is the second time my center part has been removed for a photo. But the photo is here in the picture section.

The trip report is really great. I could not say it any better. The apple pie was unlike any other pie. And if the photos showed more of my center, you'd know I've had more than my share of pie. Therefor trust me,when I saw it was outstanding. The sandwiches were excellent too, but that pie!

I will tell you all now, I hate to type. Just hate it. Talking, maybe like Wilson, in comment above? Yep, that be me. Thank The Lord, I can talk! But will share a bit more, as painful it is to me, to type it.

Everything that Jackie has posted here, is exactly what I experienced too. Jackie captured the store and the event for you all here in words and pictures. She really did a great job with it. I express this because it's exactly what I would have done. But experiencing is so much better than documenting.

A balloonist made me a balloon of Buzby. There was this balloon maker, making a lot of balloons for the guests. He was really creative and could make almost anything. Though when I tried to get him to make one of me, you know my other self inside the marsh, he stated, that was a little more (size) than he could do on the spot.

And there was also the "good-ole RAG-TIME, banjo type, musical band", the 3-4 piece band was excellent. Fit in really well. It reminded me of the days gone by at the amusement parks. When possible, may I suggest these 2 components be brought back into the park for regular operating days. The guests will love it.

Squid mentioned, "a cry", because of what was happening at the Mansion. He stated, the place will bring a tear to the eye. Actually I teared before I got to the park and lost it almost completely when The Mount Paran kids starting singing. And that's when they did a trial run briefly before everyone took their spots. LOLOL. Lost it again when the program actually started with them. That was a nice touch.

They speak of being "Disneyed", well, I can call that one being "Sixed". To envoke emotions, well, that's the ticket. Flags ya got me there. It was great.

Being Mr 6 and not an employee (once again, I'm telling you) of Six Flags Atlanta, has some perks. So I went over to Phil Mendez, to tell him that I did really love his drawings. As you all know, the monsters are based around his pictures. He was on the team for The Monster Plantation way back in late seventies, early eighties. And did much work on the project. Well, he tells me let him speak to one other person and then he will draw me a picture. Cool.

While it was getting close to starting time, I actually thought he may not have enough time. As I was now sitting with my Forums Group he brings me a drawing. Yeah we all flipped, and Jackie snapped me up, photo and all. Again, thanks Jackie for removing my center part before you posted the picture. Dogbert and Mark, I decided the "Wilson" pose, didn't realize at the time, was to concentrate on photo, not Mr 6. But good observation.

I understand The Monstore has a few more drawings too. I suggested that others be made available for sale. However, those decisions are made by Six Flags and most likely have to get approved, permissioned and go through other red tape. But some limited edition prints etc. might be a neat idea for a new product, autographed prints? I also thought about making models available some of my marsh friends. I suspect, I'm a bit jealous that the store has only nice monster friends.

Where's me a stuffed animal? Better yet, you can make some heavy resin models of me. I bet I'll be a sell-out. evil Also swamp serpent, and E-e-rategator want to be for sale too. And I don't want any trouble in the marsh, so let's see what we can do. But the store is beautiful and laid out nicely. And I finally got a museum too. Way cool and nice. Great work.

Also a shout out to the crew and company. Thanks. I have figured and prayed, that there will be many many more human years for Wildthing. But know for certain thousands upon thousands, will now actually see The Billy Bob care taker's name for years to come. And we also have the plot-spot where he we'll go inside the mansion when the time comes. Once you in that many years, they tell me that's where you stay, forever! This way out, this way out, does not apply to caretakers and monsters in the mansion.  smiley

I will end this with some new names of the monsters and friends. I didn't see any references to the new ones. But if someone one stated them already, I apologize.

The 3 frogs are relatives to the ones that were at the Bullfrog Review. They are Bull, Ribbit and Croak. Also the 3 other new monsters are Splish, Splash and Squirt. 97 monsters plus 8 new friends, make 105 monster friends total, well, I guess some are friendly. You already know the names of the other 2, that greet you when you enter the mansion. By the way, not all my monsters can be seen, if you try a head count. Trust me they see you though.

So thanks again to everyone for making this a great 6 day for me. 6 knows, it's not easy to put this kind of event together. It takes over hundreds for this kind of  show event. Organizing, phone calls, coordinations and promotions,  all your hard work really showed, I had a great day at my Flags.  kiss

Now ya'll didn't think I was going to give you ride details. Did you? Humans? Don't they ever listen? Well sometimes they do. But not this time. Ya'll have to see it for yourselves. It is something to see.

Ya'll come back now, ya'll hear?

Hi guys,  This is OrlandoRob.  I need someone with a really good camera to do me a favor.  I think I am in one of the group photos hanging on the wall behind Papa Razzi, but I can't tell for sure.  If anyone goes to the park, PLEASE take a photo of the photos hanging on the wall to Papa's left (between him and his bird).  It's hard to tell, but one of the photos looks like a Yearbook photo of The Great Six Flags AirRacer.  I would be over the moon to know my photograph is in the ride.

If you can can get a good photo, please email it to me at JRobMcC2003@yahoo.com.

THANKS!

Yeah but it was still fun.

I love the changes to the mansion. Except today the Frogs that squirt water weren't squirting... Papa-Razzi and Nestor were great. The new look is amazing. I also love the new marsh, so much so that I had to get multiple rides in just on the mansion today.

Even had the pleasure of talking to someone who hadn't been in the park since the ride was originally the Okefenokee ride. They loved it and would definitely return to the park if they are going to reinvest in their rides like they did with this one.

Also, I have to add that I like the new voices. Although I wasn't happy with them at first, they seem to be more modernistic. Mizzy has a new voice, and they involve tatty-too in her dialogue. Billy Bob Fritter has a new voice and dialogue. Gegenbacher aka Mr6 also has a new voice.  I've also noticed that quite a few other characters were changed, and things were added in various scenes including the "R.I.P. Armstrong" (way to go WildThing  smiley ).

I also broke down today and bought some plushies (Buzby and Billy Bob) from Monstore. I think I suprised Jolly Roger because I actually bought merchandise (I don't usually, especially since they took out Season Pass Holder day). I'd like a few more options to buy, but understand that not all of the monsters will be easily reproduced in plushie type toys.

But the one thing I really like is that the ride is more 4D, and that you can actually SEE the entire ride now. Even in the marsh... the marshall's timing on the cannon needs to be slowed a little more, or the current needs to be slowed down. I know that they had to speed up the water flow because of the waits they had for the ride Saturday.

And thankfully, they are using both sides of the dock again.  cool

Chris told me at the ACE Monster Plantation event last year about trying to plan another 1 this year. He told me that Jackie, Brad, and himself were considering  doing it right before this years Fright Fest.
